The United States men’s national soccer team has been part of the World Cup since the very first tournament in 1930, where the U.S. reached the semifinals, finishing third — their best result ever. After early appearances in the 1930s and 1950s, the U.S. had a long gap before becoming a regular World Cup qualifier from 1990 through 2014. The team missed the 2018 World Cup, ending a streak of seven consecutive tournaments, but qualified again for 2022 in Qatar.

In the 2020s, a generation of American players based in Europe — including stars like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Sergiño Dest, and Gio Reyna — has helped elevate the team’s profile. The U.S. won multiple CONCACAF Nations League titles and earned competitive results against strong international sides during friendlies leading up to 2026.

As one of the three host nations — alongside Mexico and Canada — the United States automatically qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place June 11 to July 19, 2026 across North America.

Group Stage – Group D

In the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, the USMNT has been placed into Group D, where they will face:

  • Paraguay — A South American team returning to the World Cup that the U.S. recently beat in a friendly.

  • Australia — A strong Asian qualifier with World Cup experience, who the U.S. also played in a recent friendly.

  • Turkey – A passionate and unpredictable European team known for its attacking style and historic third-place finish at the FIFA World Cup 2002.

The U.S. will play its group matches at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and at Lumen Field in Seattle, starting with their opening game against Paraguay on June 12, 2026.
