The Saudi Arabia national football team, known as Al-Akhdar (The Green Falcons), represents Saudi Arabia in international football and is governed by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
Saudi Arabia made their FIFA World Cup debut in 1994, producing an outstanding performance by reaching the Round of 16 in their very first appearance — still their best result to date. Since then, they have qualified for the World Cup multiple times (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018, 2022, and now 2026), establishing themselves as one of Asia’s most consistent national teams.
One of their most memorable moments came at the 2022 World Cup, when they shocked the world by defeating eventual champions Argentina 2–1 in the group stage — one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.
Saudi Arabia has also won the AFC Asian Cup three times (1984, 1988, 1996) and has produced notable players such as Sami Al-Jaber, Yasser Al-Qahtani, and Salem Al-Dawsari.
In late 2025, Saudi Arabia secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a strong AFC qualifying campaign, confirming their continued dominance in Asian football.
Saudi Arabia’s World Cup 2026 Group — Group E
Saudi Arabia has been drawn into Group E alongside:
Germany — Four-time World Cup champions.
Uruguay — Two-time World Cup winners from South America.
South Africa — A strong and athletic African side.
This group presents a significant challenge, with two historically successful football nations in Germany and Uruguay. However, the expanded format allows the top two teams — and several best third-placed teams — to progress to the knockout stage.
Saudi Arabia will aim to replicate their competitive spirit from recent tournaments and push for a return to the Round of 16 for the first time since 1994.
