The Qatar national football team, nicknamed Al Annabi (“The Maroons”), is the representative side of Qatar in international football. They made headlines when they hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Middle Eastern country to do so. Although they were automatically qualified as hosts and finished their 2022 campaign without points, they gained valuable experience on the world stage. Qatar has also enjoyed success in Asian football, winning the AFC Asian Cup in 2019 and 2023, and has steadily improved its domestic and youth development programs.
For the 2026 FIFA World Cup — held June 11 to July 19, 2026 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico — Qatar qualified through the standard AFC qualifying process for the first time by topping its fourth-round group with a key 2–1 win over the United Arab Emirates. This marks their second consecutive World Cup appearance, and the first earned on competitive merit rather than as hosts.
