Portugal has qualified for the World Cup seven times. The first was in 1966, the second time was 20 years later in 1986, and the third was in 2002. Since 2002, the team has consistently qualified for the world tournament. 2022 will be Portugal's 8th appearance in the tournament.
“A Seleção”, as it was expected, managed to qualify for Qatar 2022 through the playoff path, defeating North Macedonia to ensure an appearance at the finals for the eighth time. Despite being regular competitors on this stage, though, they have yet to win it. Their best performance was in 1966 when they finished in third place led by Eusebio.
This will probably be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final appearance at the World Cup. All eyes will be on the 37-year-old talisman and he will be a key player in Qatar, who is desperate to add a first team world crown to his already bursting trophy cabinet. Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes will also be pivotal for the squad managed by Fernando Santos.
Portugal is seeded in Group H with Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea.
