Argentina is one of the most successful national football teams in the world, having won two World Cups in 1978 and 1986. Argentina has been runners up three times: in 1930, 1990 and 2014. The team was present in all but four of the World Cups. They qualified second after Brazil in the CONMEBOL confederation.
Lionel Messi, “The Albicelestes” captain and Paris Saint Germain superstar, will be 35 by the time of the finals, and Qatar is being billed by many as the last chance for him to add the World Cup trophy to his already bulging cabinet and cap off a remarkable career.
One man does not make the team. There are, of course, ten other players who will need to share Messi’s burden and rise to the challenge. There is plenty of additional talent in Lionel Scaolini’s side to, not least from the likes of Angel Di Maria, who scored the vital goal in that Copa America final victory over Brazil last year.
Argentina is seeded in Group C with Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland
